Police say the youths allegedly tried to force their way through a secured gate and threw stones at officers guarding the convoy.
Twelve people have been arrested in Siaya after a group of youths allegedly attempted to block a convoy carrying First Lady Rachel Ruto following a women’s empowerment event in Siaya town.
The incident happened on Tuesday, September 8, shortly after the First Lady concluded a women’s economic empowerment function at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) grounds.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the youths attempted to force their way through a secured gate as Rachel Ruto’s convoy headed towards a designated landing and take-off site.
The group allegedly obstructed the convoy and pelted police officers manning the entrance with stones.
Police officers moved in to restore order before arresting 12 suspects believed to have been involved in the incident.
The suspects remained in police custody as officers processed them ahead of arraignment.
Detectives are also continuing with investigations to establish whether other individuals were involved in the incident.
The DCI said citizens have a right to assemble and express themselves peacefully but warned that violence, obstruction of lawful operations and attacks on police officers would not be tolerated.
Those found culpable will face legal action, the agency said.
