Ruto Pledges to Sponsor Five University Students Annually for 10 Years
President William Ruto has pledged to sponsor 50 students at International Leadership University over the next decade, promising to support five university students every year for the next 10 years.
Ruto made the commitment on Thursday, November 5, during the award of a university charter to International Leadership University at State House, Nairobi.
The President said the pledge was motivated by his longstanding relationship with LIFE Ministry, which sponsors the institution, adding that he wanted to give back by supporting students pursuing higher education.
“Because of the history I have with Life Ministry, for the next 10 years, God willing, I will sponsor 5 University students every year,” Ruto said.
He explained that the sponsorship programme would be developed in consultation with the university’s chancellor, with both parties agreeing on the courses that would benefit from the funding.
“I will discuss with the chancellor what that means, we will agree on which courses to sponsor, that are relevant which the university thinks that are core value,” he added.
Beyond the student sponsorship, Ruto announced plans to mobilise his friends to contribute resources towards establishing an endowment fund for the university.
“Secondly I will mobilize friends so that we can provide resources for an endowment fund for the university,” he said.
An endowment fund is a pool of money invested to generate returns that can provide long-term financial support to an institution.
The two commitments would see Ruto directly support students while also seeking additional resources through his networks to strengthen the university’s financial capacity.
However, the President did not disclose the amount of money he intends to commit towards the student sponsorship or set a financial target for the proposed endowment fund.
