Four Injured After Building Collapses Along Moi Avenue
A building that formerly housed Club Avenida along Moi Avenue in Nairobi’s Central Business District collapsed during a night demolition exercise, leaving four people injured and prompting calls for an investigation into the incident.
The collapse occurred on Friday night, October 16, 2026, when traffic along the busy street was relatively low, potentially preventing a more serious tragedy.
Nairobi City County Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service Geoffrey Mosiria confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Saturday morning.
Mosiria said the timing of the collapse helped reduce the risk to pedestrians and motorists who normally fill the area during the day.
“We thank God the incident happened at night when there was minimal human traffic along the road, as lives could have been lost,” he said.
Details about the identities of the injured people and the full extent of their injuries had not been officially provided in his statement.
Mosiria Calls for Investigation
Following the incident, Mosiria called on Nairobi County engineers to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collapse and establish whether the demolition was carried out in accordance with safety regulations.
He said the investigation should establish whether qualified professionals supervised the demolition and whether the necessary approvals had been obtained before the work began.
“I call upon our county engineers to conduct a thorough investigation into this specific demolition to establish the cause of the collapse, determine whether qualified experts were involved to guide the demolition, and verify whether all the necessary demolition approvals had been obtained,” he stated.
The probe is expected to establish what caused the building to give way and whether the required safety procedures were followed.
Warning to Developers
The county official also urged developers to comply with construction and demolition regulations, warning that failure to observe safety requirements can put workers and members of the public at risk.
He called for closer cooperation between developers and county engineers to ensure demolition projects are properly supervised and carried out safely.
The incident has renewed concerns about building safety in Nairobi, where demolition and construction activities often take place in busy commercial areas.
Authorities are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the collapse and determine whether any safety requirements were breached.
Further details about the investigation and the condition of the injured people were not immediately available.
