Why Your HELB Loan May Not Have Arrived and What You Can Do About It
Thousands of students are waiting for HELB loans to cater for their upkeep and tuition as the new academic year gets underway. While some have started receiving their money, others are still checking their accounts, wondering why their loans have not arrived.
The delay does not always mean an application has been rejected. In some cases, students may have entered incorrect details, while others are waiting for their loans to be processed or disbursed.
Here are the reasons your HELB loan may not have arrived and what you can do about it.
1. Your M-Pesa or bank details may be incorrect
One mistake that can interfere with payment is providing incorrect mobile money or bank account details.
HELB requires applicants to provide valid payment details. For M-Pesa payments, the number must be registered under the student’s name and ID.
Students should log into the official portal and confirm that the payment details they submitted are correct. If the information is wrong, they should seek guidance from HELB on how to correct it.
2. Your loan may still be awaiting disbursement
Submitting an application does not mean the money will be sent immediately.
HELB processes applications through different stages, including verification, allocation and disbursement. A student whose loan has been allocated may still have to wait before the money is released.
On October 14, reports indicated that HELB was asking some university students whose loans had been allocated to wait for confirmation from their deans that they were currently in session.
Students in this situation should check their loan status and contact their institution if university confirmation is required.
3. You may have submitted an incomplete application
Missing information can create problems during the application process.
HELB requires students to provide details such as their identification information, examination details, guarantor information and payment details. Other documents may be required depending on the applicant’s circumstances.
Students should confirm that they completed all the required sections and successfully submitted their applications.
4. You may be checking the wrong loan status
A student whose application is still being processed is not in the same position as one whose funds have already been disbursed.
HELB provides an online student portal where applicants can check their application, allocation and disbursement status.
Students should log into the portal to establish the stage their applications have reached instead of relying on messages from other students or assuming that a delay means rejection.
5. Your application may not have been submitted successfully
Starting an application is not the same as completing it.
HELB says students who successfully apply receive a confirmation SMS containing a loan application serial number. The message serves as evidence that the application was submitted.
Students who cannot find this confirmation should check their application status through the official portal to establish whether the process was completed.
6. Your loan may not have been allocated yet
Some students may have completed their applications but are still waiting for a funding decision or allocation.
HELB’s October 12 update listed seven batches that had been processed and disbursed as of October 9, 2026. Students whose batches were not included should check subsequent announcements and their individual portal status.
Not appearing on a particular batch list does not, on its own, prove that a student has been rejected.
7. You may be eligible to apply but not eligible for that particular loan
HELB has different loan categories with specific eligibility requirements.
For example, its undergraduate loan programme covers eligible students pursuing bachelor’s degrees at public or chartered private universities within the East African Community. The programme excludes pre-university, certificate, diploma and postgraduate students.
Applicants should therefore confirm that they selected the correct loan category for their course and institution. Eligibility for one funding product does not automatically mean eligibility for another.
What to do if your HELB loan has not arrived
Students who have not received their loans should first check their status through the official HELB website or Higher Education Financing portal.
They should confirm that their application was submitted successfully, review their personal and payment details, and check whether the loan has been allocated or disbursed.
Those whose applications remain unclear can contact HELB through its official support channels on 0711 052 000 or email ContactCentre@helb.co.ke.
Students should also avoid paying brokers who promise to speed up applications or guarantee funding. HELB says its loan application process is free.
A delayed payment does not automatically mean a student made a mistake or was denied funding. Checking the actual application status is the first step towards finding out what happened.
