WhatsApp Username Privacy: Why Some Users Prefer Sharing Their Phone Numbers
Kenyans are being warned that their WhatsApp usernames could cost them business deals, important information and potential opportunities if people cannot easily find their phone numbers.
The warning has raised questions about whether using a WhatsApp username is worth it, especially for people who rely on their phones to run businesses, find clients and stay connected.
WhatsApp introduced usernames to give users more privacy by allowing them to connect with others without immediately revealing their phone numbers. However, some users may prefer the traditional approach of sharing their numbers directly.
Here are the main reasons behind the concerns.
1. Fear of Losing Business Deals and Customers
For business owners, freelancers and people who regularly deal with new clients, being easy to reach can make a difference. A potential customer might find someone’s WhatsApp username but still need their phone number to make a conventional call.
This is particularly relevant for people who advertise products and services online. Some customers prefer calling directly rather than sending a WhatsApp message and waiting for a response.
However, there is no verified evidence that businesses are losing deals specifically because of WhatsApp usernames. The concern is that making contact more difficult could discourage some potential customers.
2. Missing Important Calls and Information
Not everyone who wants to contact you will prefer sending a WhatsApp message. Employers, business partners, customers and other contacts may want to call directly to discuss an urgent matter.
If someone knows your username but does not have your phone number, they may be unable to reach you through a conventional mobile call.
This is one reason some users may prefer making their phone numbers available, particularly when they use WhatsApp for professional networking.
3. Making It Easier for New People to Find Them
WhatsApp usernames allow people to connect without exchanging phone numbers first. While this offers privacy, it also changes how people discover and save contacts.
Someone who has only your username may not have the phone number needed to contact you outside WhatsApp. Deleting the username allows your phone number to become visible again, potentially making it easier for new contacts to save it.
However, deleting a username does not automatically make someone more reachable in every situation. Their ability to receive calls still depends on network coverage, whether their phone is available and other factors.
4. Preference for Traditional Phone-Number Communication
Some users may simply prefer the old way of sharing contacts. A phone number can be saved in an address book and used for ordinary calls, SMS messages and WhatsApp, provided the number is registered on the platform.
For people who frequently exchange contacts with customers or professional connections, sharing a number may feel more straightforward than asking someone to search for a username.
The trade-off is privacy. Making a number visible to more people can expose users to unwanted calls, messages and potential spam.
5. Concerns About Becoming Harder to Reach
The warning has also raised a broader question: could people become harder to reach if they rely entirely on usernames?
A username can be useful when someone does not want strangers to see their phone number. But if a contact needs to reach the user through a conventional mobile call, the username alone is not a substitute for a phone number.
For people who use WhatsApp for business, networking or public-facing work, keeping their contact details accessible may therefore be a priority.
There is, however, no confirmed evidence that usernames are causing widespread communication problems among Kenyan users.
Ultimately, deleting a WhatsApp username comes down to personal preference. Those who value privacy may choose to keep theirs, while people who prioritise direct access may prefer sharing their phone numbers.
The key question is whether the convenience of being easier to reach outweighs the privacy that comes with keeping your number hidden.
