Ebola does not always cause bleeding. These are the symptoms that can appear first and the warning signs that should not be ignored.
It can start like an ordinary fever — then become much more serious. Here are the warning signs to watch for.
Ebola can begin with a sudden fever, severe headache and extreme weakness. Other symptoms may follow as the illness progresses.
Common symptoms include:
- Fever
- Severe headache
- Extreme tiredness and weakness
- Muscle pain
- Sore throat
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Skin rash
- Unexplained bleeding
Bleeding can occur in some patients, but not everyone with Ebola bleeds.
The symptoms can look like other illnesses, so having a fever or diarrhoea does not automatically mean someone has Ebola.
People who develop these symptoms, particularly after possible contact with an Ebola case, should seek medical attention immediately and tell health workers about the possible exposure.
Do not wait for bleeding before seeking help.
