Kabarnet Women Take to the Streets, Accuse Alcohol of Ruining Marriages and Intimacy
Women in Kabarnet, Baringo County, have taken to the streets to protest what they describe as the devastating effects of excessive alcohol consumption on families, accusing men of neglecting their marital responsibilities after drinking heavily.
During the demonstration, the women expressed frustration over what they said was the growing impact of alcohol abuse on marriages, family relationships and the well-being of children and older men.
One of the protesters questioned how families were expected to function when men allegedly spent much of their time drinking and returned home unable to fulfil their responsibilities.
“Nani atazalisha akina mama na wazee wanalala kama magunia? Pombe imeua watoto wetu, pombe imeua wazee. Usiku wazee hawafanyi kitu,” the woman said.
She went on to demand government intervention, calling on local leaders to provide alternative solutions to the alcohol problem affecting their community.
“Tunaomba serikali ilete njia mbadala. Ofisi ya governor iko wapi? Ofisi Women Rep iko wapi? Ofisi ya MCA iko wapi?” she posed.
The protesters said they wanted an environment where women could live peacefully with their families, warning that they would not stop demonstrating until the authorities addressed their concerns.
“Tunataka wamama waishi kwa familia yao kwa amani. Ikiwa serikali haiwezi kuchukua hatua, sisi wamama tutaandama mpaka serikali ichukue hatua,” she added.
The demonstration highlights growing concerns raised by the women over alcohol consumption and its alleged effects on family life in the area.
The protesters are now demanding action from county and national government authorities, particularly local leaders, to address the concerns they have raised.
