Why Kenyans Keep Suspecting Oburu Odinga Is Dead Despite Family and ODM Party Denials
Oburu Odinga’s absence from public events has become a subject of online speculation, with some Kenyans questioning whether the veteran politician is alive despite his family and ODM leaders dismissing reports of his death.
The questions intensified after he failed to attend the October 7 ceremony marking the handover of his younger brother Raila Odinga’s mausoleum in Bondo, Siaya County.
President William Ruto presided over the event, attended by members of the Odinga family and political leaders. But Oburu, Raila’s elder brother and ODM party leader, was nowhere to be seen.
His absence has fuelled questions about his whereabouts, particularly because it came weeks after reports of his medical treatment in Kenya and the United Kingdom.
Absence From Raila’s Mausoleum Ceremony
Oburu’s absence from the ceremony raised eyebrows because of the importance of the occasion to the Odinga family.
As Raila’s elder brother, many would have expected him to be present as the family marked the handover of the mausoleum.
Instead, his apologies were conveyed by family members. His son, Jaoko Oburu Odinga, also addressed the gathering on his behalf, explaining that his father was recovering and had been advised by doctors to rest.
For some social media users, his failure to attend became another reason to question his whereabouts.
His Recent Medical Treatment
The speculation comes after Oburu’s recent health challenges attracted public attention.
Reports in September indicated that he had been hospitalised in Nairobi before travelling to the United Kingdom for medical checks. His medical trip and subsequent return to Kenya prompted discussion about his condition.
His later absence from public engagements has kept the subject alive online, with some users connecting the separate events to suggest that something more serious may have happened.
However, receiving medical treatment or staying away from public events is not evidence that someone has died.
What His Family and ODM Have Said
On October 6, Oburu’s secretariat dismissed the death reports circulating online, assuring the public that he was alive and recovering.
ODM officials also rejected the claims, while his son provided an update during the mausoleum ceremony, saying his father had been advised to avoid physically demanding activities.
These statements contradict the rumours spreading on social media.
Why the Speculation Persists
The central issue is the gap between the public’s curiosity about Oburu’s condition and the limited details available about his recovery.
His position in ODM and the Odinga family makes his absence particularly noticeable. When a prominent politician misses a major family occasion after reports of medical treatment, questions are likely to follow.
But questions and online claims are not proof. The available public statements point to a politician recovering under medical advice, not confirmation of the death rumours.
For now, the claims that Oburu Odinga has died remain unsubstantiated, while his family and party maintain that he is alive.
