Tanzania’s First Gentleman Hafidh Ameir Hassan has died at 76, leaving President Samia Suluhu Hassan and their four children mourning a loss after nearly five decades of marriage.
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has lost the man who had been by her side long before she became the country’s first woman to occupy the presidency.
Hafidh Ameir Hassan, Tanzania’s First Gentleman, died on Monday morning at the age of 76 while receiving treatment in Zanzibar.
The announcement was made by Tanzania’s Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who said Hafidh died at about 8 a.m. at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital.
“It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of Mr Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan.”
The news has brought attention to a side of President Samia’s life that has often remained away from the political cameras — her family.
A marriage that began long before the presidency
Long before Samia Suluhu Hassan was receiving visiting heads of state or addressing international summits, she was a wife and mother building a family with Hafidh.
The two married in 1978.
Their marriage lasted through Samia’s gradual rise in public life, from her early government career in Zanzibar to Parliament, the vice presidency and, eventually, the presidency in 2021.
They had four children — three sons and one daughter.
But while Samia’s political profile grew, Hafidh largely stayed away from the attention that came with it.
That changed when Samia became president.
Suddenly, the relatively private husband became Tanzania’s First Gentleman.
The man who rarely chased the spotlight
Hafidh Ameir was not the kind of political spouse constantly appearing at the centre of government events.

He was an agriculturalist by profession, while Samia built a career in politics that eventually took her to the highest office in Tanzania.

Their daughter also entered politics
Politics did eventually become part of the Ameir family’s story.
Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, has been involved in Zanzibar politics and has served in the Zanzibar House of Representatives.
But Hafidh himself remained largely removed from the political contest.
His significance came mainly from his relationship with Samia and the unusual position he occupied after she became president.
He became the first male spouse of a Tanzanian president, giving him a place in the country’s political history even though he did not seek political power himself.
Hafidh’s final hours
According to the announcement, Hafidh had been receiving treatment for a heart condition before his death.
He died at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar at approximately 8 a.m. on Monday, September 7, 2026.
Funeral arrangements are expected to take place in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, where the family has strong roots.
The announcement immediately triggered messages of condolence from across Tanzania and beyond.
A private loss for a very public woman
President Samia has spent much of her political career under intense public scrutiny.
Her rise was historic. She became Tanzania’s first female vice president and later its first female president.
But behind those milestones was a family life that existed largely away from the headlines.
Hafidh was there before the presidency, before State House and before Samia became one of East Africa’s most recognisable political figures.
Now, Tanzania is mourning its First Gentleman.
And for Samia, the loss is much more than the death of a man who carried an important title.
It is the loss of the husband she married in 1978, the father of her children and the person who shared a large part of her journey long before the whole country was watching.
