Three people die in a fresh crash at Salama, a day after 17 were killed in a separate accident at the same black spot.
Three people have died in a road accident at Salama along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, just a day after 17 people were killed in a separate crash at the same black spot.
The latest crash happened on Sunday at the Mlima Kiu-Salama stretch in Makueni County, bringing the number of people killed in crashes reported in the area over the weekend to 20.
Saturday’s accident involved multiple vehicles, including a 14-seater Toyota Hiace carrying 17 Catholic pilgrims from St Mathias Mulumba Parish in Mikindani, Mombasa. The pilgrims were travelling to the Subukia National Shrine in Nakuru for the National Prayer Day. All 17 occupants of the van died.
The Saturday crash also left several other people injured. NTSA dispatched a multidisciplinary team to investigate the accident and confirmed that the Mlima Kiu-Salama stretch is a known black spot. The authority urged motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking and observe lane discipline.
The back-to-back crashes have renewed concerns about safety along the busy highway, with the latest deaths coming barely a day after one of the deadliest crashes reported on the stretch.
Authorities have established the cause of the latest accident as investigations continue.
