Gachagua says he would have no problem deputizing Edwin Sifuna if their political arithmetic shows the ODM politician can help defeat President William Ruto in 2027.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has thrown another twist into Kenya’s 2027 political conversation, saying he would be willing to deputize ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna if that is what it takes to send President William Ruto home.
Speaking during a political engagement, Gachagua said political alliances should be guided by what can deliver victory rather than by personal positions or fixed expectations over who should occupy which seat.
“If we do our arithmetic and we find that Edwin Sifuna ndio atapeleka huyu mtu nyumbani, so be it, and there is no problem, even I Riggy G will deputize him, kwani iko makosa gani?” Gachagua said.
The remarks immediately put Sifuna at the centre of an unlikely political scenario, with Gachagua appearing to suggest that he would be ready to take the number-two position if Sifuna emerged as the person capable of defeating Ruto in the 2027 presidential election.
Gachagua puts victory before position
Gachagua’s comments point to the increasingly fluid nature of Kenya’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 polls.
Rather than insisting on being the presidential candidate, the former Deputy President suggested that the bigger question should be who has the numbers and political strength to defeat Ruto.
His reference to “arithmetic” is significant in Kenya’s highly competitive elections, where coalition-building and the ability to consolidate different voting blocs can determine who emerges victorious.
The statement also highlights the possibility of alliances that may appear unlikely today but could become politically viable as the 2027 election approaches.
Sifuna drawn into 2027 succession politics
Sifuna has been one of the most outspoken figures in opposition politics and a prominent defender of the ODM side of the political divide.
Gachagua’s willingness to contemplate deputizing him therefore presents a striking political proposition, particularly given the different political backgrounds of the two men.
But Gachagua’s argument appears to be simple: if the numbers show that Sifuna is the person who can help defeat Ruto, then political pride should not stand in the way.
With the 2027 presidential contest already beginning to take shape, such statements are likely to fuel further debate over who will unite the opposition and who will ultimately lead the ticket.
